Patent from Hiram Maxim
[edit]So I am trying to look for the patent for as mentioned in the first sentence of the History section, but I am having bad luck finding it. The website that is used as a source there isn't really correct, so I wanted to fix it. I found a scan of the patent, but a random scan from someone on Reddit isn't really a great source. Here is the scan if anyone wants to look at it. Anyways, if anyone could help find the actual patent that would be amazing. Thanks! Snoowastaken (talk) 18:33, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- The images are different, but Maxim cites US319595A as the US version of the UK patent in your link. I took the liberty of adding it to the article. I hope you find what you need. Stochastioscopy (talk) 19:44, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
Remove "civialian uses" section?
[edit]I'm not sure this section adds anything very meaningful to the article. Of course, semi-automatic firearms could be used for any of those things, but manual or fully-automatic ones could too. There doesn't appear to be any special relationship semi-automatics in particular have here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scenichill (talk • contribs) 19:31, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- I agree. On the other hand, though, this section could be reframed as "Civilian Market," which would be more deserving of its own section, as semi-automatic rifles have had a unique relationship with the civilian market IMO (like, I feel there would be a lot to say about how the civilian market has affected the development of semi-automatic rifles in a way that you don't really see with other types of guns). History Section
[edit]The history section begins very abruptly and I feel it should begin with a brief contextualization, i.e. development of rifles, development of lever and bolt actions, development of cartridges. Which sounds like a lot, but I'm sure someone who's well versed could contextualize that historical backdrop/course of development very concisely. Buglover100000 (talk) 19:10, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
Semi-Automatic Rifle
[edit]While much of this article discusses semi-automatic actions, their development and application, it doesn't satisfyingly bring in the rifle aspect. I think more detail in the history section, especially some brief context on the development of semi-automatic guns as a whole and some contrast between semi-auto rifles and their shotgun counterparts which were first developed around the same time period, could satisfy that more. Where is the promotional part?
[edit]okay, maybe I am just blind. But can anybody point out to me where the promotional part is? —Mint Keyphase (Did I mess up? What have I done?) 05:57, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- Perhaps we share the same visual defect, but absence of a talk page explanation raises the possibility of drive-by tagging. Thewellman (talk) 23:32, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'll go ahead and remove it. —Mint Keyphase (Did I mess up? What have I done?) 04:39, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
